Black Rain Ordnance honored to create custom rifle in memory of fallen officer.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2016 Columbus Police Officer Steven M. Smith was laid to rest after succumbing to a gunshot wound he sustained riding in the turret of a SWAT armored vehicle while attempting to execute an arrest warrant. Smith was only 54 years old at the time of his passing but accomplished so much in his life, both personal and professional. Smith was a 27 year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police during which he served as a member of the dive team recovering submerged evidence; it was in this capacity that he gained the nickname “Scuba Steve” from his SWAT Teammates. As a member of IN/TAC, Smith earned another nickname, “Smitty Badger”, inspired by his go-getter attitude and resolve to bring justice to those he served. Ask those closest to him and they will say if there was a title Smith revered more than Officer, it was Family Man. Smith and his wife Lisa were married for 32 happy years, and raised two children together, Brittany and Jesse.  Whether it was piloting helicopters, riding with his SWAT teammates, or diving into a body of water, Smith exhibited what it meant to be a Police Officer. But more than that, he demonstrated what it meant to be a positive influence on his community.
